Hotel Alfonso XIII: The Grande Dame of Seville

Located in the heart of Seville, the luxurious Hotel Alfonso XIII symbolizes the city's Moorish influences and provides access to the renowned Santa Cruz quarter and Guadalquivir River. Designed by the architect José Espiau y Muñoz, it was built between 1916 and 1928 especially for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 with a sumptuous banquet attended by King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. Recently renovated in 2012, this landmark hotel, just a few hundred yards from the cathedral, has become synonymous with the ultimate in palatial luxury. Its style is full-on Andalusian glamour. With its minarets, stunning ballroom, sumptuous ceramic tiling and grandiose Moorish arches. The smart and elegant San Fernando restaurant and its surrounding cloistered galleries is the place for formal breakfasts, lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch with classic dishes given an Andalusian flourish, such as entrecote steak with orange wine sauce. At the more informal terrace bar and restaurant ENA Sevilla, there’s gastronomic tapas and chic, international fare from Catalan superchef Carles Abellán, such as Iberian ham, fresh mozzarella and truffle on toast, or hamburger with ganache of foie-gras. Or, to sip a martini in style, there’s the Bar Americano, where Hemingway drank. Breakfast is a lavish buffet affair served in the outdoor courtyard, and during the annual April Feria, the whole city comes alive for a week of dancing, food, and celebrations.
